Restoring ownership of user data to users

by Pisana Ferrari – cApStAn Ambassador to the Global Village

Tim Berners-Lee, credited with the invention of the world wide web, has joined forces with entrepreneur John Bruce to create a company called “Inrupt”, the aim of which is to “bring resources, process and appropriate skills” to promote the adoption of the long-running Solid decentralised web project. In the Solid model, user data such as identity, posts, photos, likes, comments etc. are stored in personal online “pods”, which only the user has and can grant access to. This would lead to a reversal of the current situation where, for example, Facebook or Twitter effectively “own” users’ data by “locking it down in their own walled gardens and using it as they see fit”.
