cApStAn at the CSDI Workshop 2026
‘CSDI Workshop (Comparative Survey Design and Implementation) will be held in Vienna on March 23-25, 2026! Our colleague, Musab, will be attending, and will be co‑chairing the session “Questionnaire Translation for Cultural Contexts” together with Dr. Brita Dorer from GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences.
The session brings together recent research and practical advances in multilingual questionnaire translation, quality assurance, and the integration of emerging technologies into established workflows. Contributions examine approaches for guiding expert reviewers—ranging from traditional Question Appraisal Systems (QAS) to applications of generative AI—and introducing new community resources such as repositories of multilingual answer scales. Other talks explore the experimental effort on incorporating innovative approaches to multilingual survey translations with established methodologies like TRAPD, while two more keep us on the ground by focusing respectively on evaluating translation review methods, and looking at evolution of translating terms over time with a focus on US Spanish terms. Collectively, these presentations explore, and stress, the ongoing effort to ensure rigorous, adaptive, and transparent practices to ensure high‑quality multilingual survey instruments.
Musab has two presentations at CSDI: co‑presenting with Tobias Weber on building a repository for multilingual answer scales to support the wider research community, a GESIS project supported by DFG, as well as presenting on integrating technological advances with established translation methodology—A hybrid approach to TRAPD. ‘
