cApStAn and Enovate as Gold Sponsor at E-ATP 2026 in Rome
The proverb “All roads lead to Rome” only dates back to the Middle Ages: it first appeared in the 12th century, in Medieval Latin, so it is recent history compared to Rome’s. While the proverb observes that, in the Roman Empire, all major thoroughfares led to Rome, it actually means that the same outcome can be attained in many different ways. The outcome envisaged at the E-ATP 2026 Conference in Rome, on 7-9 October, is to build assessment for good. The roads to building assessments for good can be laid by technology, paved with good intentions, and need to be reliable. Everyone should be allowed to access these roads; there should be no excessive toll for any subset of travellers. The European arm of the Association of Test Publishers, E-ATP, has set the bar very high with this year’s conference theme and programme. How will technological advances make assessments more equitable and contribute to empower the people who take an assessment? How can an assessment platform bake multilingualism into its core, already at item authoring stage?
The Enovate-cApStAn team, led by Devasmita Ghosh and accompanied by the founders of both companies, will suggest possible paths, answer some of these questions, and collate other roads that also lead to Rome. On October 7, 16:45-17:30, cApStAn’s founder Steve Dept will contribute to an interactive session convened and moderated by Alex Casillas, titled “Balancing Fidelity and Fairness in Cross-Cultural Contexts: A Mindset rather than a Trade-off”, which will include a simulation of a multilingual item review.
On October 8, 11:30-12:15, Enovate’s founding partner Henrik von Schlanbusch and Steve Dept will present the integration of an automated item language health check into an assessment platform. The session goes by the title of “The Elusive Language Component of Assessment – Can AI Really Help Flag and Resolve Potential Issues” and includes an illustrative case study.
On October 9, 11:15-12:30, Steve Dept will be on the closing keynote panel that will tie in with the conference theme: “Building Assessment for Good: Equity, Inclusion, and the European Experience”. Francesca Woosward (Cambridge University Press and Assessment) and Helen Coleman (ABRSM) are the other two panellists, and Shebbra Toussaint from PSI Services will orchestrate the discussion centred around accessibility and equitable opportunity from a European and global perspective.
Geoffrey Chaucer’s Middle English rendition of the proverb is “Right as diverse pathes leden diverse folk the righte way to Rome” (1391). Language has evolved as much as assessment. E-ATP 2026 is the place to be to take stock of this evolution. Rome, here we come!
