The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study is another IEA project: it collects and analyses data about students' attitude to and comprehension of civic and citizenship education. It includes a cognitive test with 74 multiple choice questions and 6 open-ended response items, and contextual questionnaires for the same students, their teachers, and their school principals. There were also three regional modules: the European Regional Module, the Latin American Regional Module and the Asian Regional Module.

The Field Trial verification took place in 2007 and the Main Survey verification in 2008/09 - there were 38 participating countries. The National Adaptation Forms (NAF) in Excel format were used to record national adaptations - which are by definition far more extensive in a study in which the students' knowledge of the political systems and notions are analyzed - as well as interventions made by cApStAn verifiers.

After the study, 'dodgy' items i.e. questions for which there were unexpected country/item effects, biased results, differential item functioning (DIF) were submitted to cApStAn for a post hoc analysis of translation issues or cultural issues that might have slipped through the net.

A most challenging and rewarding project indeed!
