AHELO
There is a strong political will to set up a test for undergraduate university students that would be underpinned by a robust assessment framework and regarded as internationally comparable. In this context, the OECD issued a call for tenders to undertake a feasibility study for an Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes (AHELO). cApStAn is a member of the consortium engaged in moving this study forward and is responsible for translation, adaptation, localisation and verification in the AHELO feasibility study. The scope of cApStAn's mission covers a broad range of linguistic quality assurance and quality control measures:
we screened the economics and engineering items for translatability;
we drafted translation and adaptation guidelines;
we designed an AHELO Translation, Adaptation and Verification (ATAV) monitoring workbook;
we trained the national centre staff in applying the double translation and reconciliation design;
we undertook the verification of the instruments translated and adapted by the countries.
The novelty in AHELO is that, considering the level of technicality of the achievement items, cApStAn set up a verification in dyads, or pairs: this process involves both a domain specialist (e.g. for each country, a lecturer or assistant lecturer in economics for the economics items, a lecturer or assistant lecturer in engineering for the items in the engineering module) and a linguist. The two verifiers are introduced to one another and trained remotely using WebEx technology.
