cApStAn at Gallup's CSDI Workshop
The 10th International Workshop on Comparative Survey Design and Implementation (CSDI) was held at the Gallup Organization World Headquarters in Washington D.C. The 2012 meeting focused on challenges researchers face at local or global level when participating in cross-cultural and/or cross-national research. All presentations were peer-reviewed and the workshop was arranged in sessions: Hard-to-Reach populations (H2R); Accommodating linguistic minorities; Immigrant research, Global and Large-Scale Survey Research; Language and data; Language and testing; Behaviour coding and response styles; Text and Media analysis; and Pretesting and beyond.
Steve Dept presented a paper (co-authored by Juliette Mendelovits, from ACER, and Andrea Ferrari, cApStAn) that illustrates the use of field test results in maximizing cross-language comparability of main data collection instruments. The study focused on the PISA2012 computer-based assessment of problem solving as a case study.
The presentation was followed by a lively discussion: is it desirable to open more communication channels between language specialists and the data analysts? We believe in a mixed approach, whereby differential item functioning analysis (DIF) and linguistic quality control (LQC) are different tools that, when used together, can eliminate a greater proportion of (potential) item bias.
OECD Meeting: PIAAC Training
